Portrush Recreation Grounds

The grassy expanse of Portrush Recreation Grounds sits right beside the seafront, and it's one of those places that rewards an aimless wander more than a scheduled visit. You get proper coastal views here - the sort where you can actually see across to Scotland on a clear day - without the crowds that descend on the more famous spots nearby.

It's fundamentally a nature reserve with paths weaving through rough grassland and coastal scrub. Birdwatchers will find plenty to keep them occupied, especially during migration seasons. The walking is gentle rather than challenging, which makes it ideal if you've got younger kids in tow or you just can't be bothered with anything too strenuous. Allow an hour for a decent loop, longer if you're stopping to look at things properly.

The real strength here is that it feels like actual countryside five minutes from Portrush town centre. You're not paying to be here, and there's no visitor centre nonsense - just open access and some sensible paths. It works brilliantly as a morning activity before heading into Bushmills for a whiskey tour, or as a leg-stretcher if you're based at Causeway Country Pods nearby.

Truthfully, it's not a destination in itself. But if you're already exploring the Causeway Coast, it's absolutely worth an hour of your time. The views justify the detour, and you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself.
