Portland Marina

The marina at Portland sits right at the southern tip of the Dorset coast, a working harbour where fishing boats bob alongside leisure craft. It's a proper working place, not a manicured tourist attraction - you'll see actual fishermen mending nets and landing catches, which gives the whole thing a genuine edge.

Walking the waterfront is free and takes about 30-45 minutes if you're ambling without rushing. The views across the water toward Weymouth are decent, especially on a clear day when you can see right across the bay. If you've got kids, they'll enjoy spotting the boats and watching the activity, though it's not the kind of place that'll hold their attention for hours. It's more of a pleasant wander than a destination in itself.

You'll find cafes and a few restaurants dotted around if you fancy a drink with a view, though they're nothing special. The real appeal is the genuine maritime atmosphere - this is where people actually work, not where boats go to be admired. It fits well into a longer coastal walk between Weymouth and Portland Bill, or as a short detour if you're staying at Ringstead Bay Camping nearby. The walk from the campsite takes about an hour, which makes it a reasonable half-day outing. Come on a weekday morning if you want to see the harbour at its most active, or avoid school holidays when it gets busier with day-trippers.
