Portishead Point

The walk out to Portishead Point rewards you with views that stretch across the Bristol Channel - on a clear day you can see right across to Wales. It's a proper coastal walk, taking you past the working marina and out along the breakwater where fishing boats bob about and the sea opens up in front of you.

The point itself isn't dramatic - no cliffs, no ruins - but that's partly why it works. You get a genuine sense of being at the edge of things, watching the channel traffic and feeling the wind come off the water. Most people allow 45 minutes to an hour for the walk there and back, depending on pace and how long you want to linger. The path is flat and easy, so it suits families with younger children, though buggies can be tricky on the breakwater itself.

Bristol's close enough that you could tackle this as a morning outing before heading inland, or use it as an evening walk to catch the light on the water. If you're staying at Somerset Glamping six miles away, it's the sort of accessible coastal break that balances well with woodland walks and market town exploring. There's a decent café back in Portishead itself if you need sustenance after.

Go when the weather's decent - grey and drizzly days strip away the appeal. Worth a stop if you're touring the North Somerset coast, less worth a dedicated journey from further afield.
