Port Na Craig Suspension Bridge

The iron footbridge at Port na Craig might not look like much from the road, but it's genuinely one of Scotland's most unexpected Victorian engineering bits. Built in 1887 to span the River Tummel near Pitlochry, this narrow suspension bridge creaks and sways underfoot in a way that's either thrilling or nerve-wracking depending on your tolerance for heights. The crossing takes about two minutes, but people often linger, gripping the cables and watching the water rush below.

It's mainly of interest to history enthusiasts and walkers tackling the larger Pitlochry routes. Families with young kids might find the bridge itself brief, though the riverside setting around it is lovely for a short stroll. There's no visitor centre or facilities I could find, and it appears to be free and accessible year-round, though weather can make the walkway slippery.

The real value comes if you're already based at one of the nearby parks - Milton Of Fonab is less than half a mile away, making this an easy morning amble before breakfast. It pairs well with Faskally Woods Holiday Park two miles up the road if you're planning several days in the area. Combined with walks around the Pitlochry Dam and visitor centre, or the longer trails around Loch Faskally, Port na Craig works as a quick bit of local character rather than a destination on its own. Worth 20 minutes of your time if you're staying locally; worth a detour otherwise? Not really.
