Pool Park

Just outside Dunbar, Pool Park is a modest nature reserve that punches above its weight if you're after a proper walk without the crowds. The main draw is the freshwater pool itself - a magnet for wildfowl and waders, especially in winter when you'll spot grebes, teal, and the occasional visiting osprey. There's a decent footpath looping the water, taking about 40 minutes at a leisurely pace, and sightlines are good from most angles.

Birders get the most out of it, frankly. If you're twitching for a new species or just keen to spend an hour with binoculars in hand, it's worth the detour from Dunbar. Families with younger kids might find it a touch quiet - the landscape is flat and open, so there's not much to scramble on or explore beyond the path itself. That said, spotting ducks rarely gets old if you're under eight.

The reserve is free to access and the walk is easy enough for most fitness levels, though it can get boggy after rain. There's limited parking, so go early in peak season. It pairs well with Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just over a mile away - a solid base for exploring the East Lothian coast. If you're staying put for a few days, Pool Park works as a peaceful morning slot before heading into Dunbar proper for lunch. Not spectacular, but honest and uncrowded.
