Pondfield Cove

The walk down to Pondfield Cove takes you through proper coastal scrubland before the path opens onto a small, sheltered beach backed by dramatic sandstone cliffs. It's not the sort of place you'll stumble across by accident - you need to know it's there, which is precisely why it works.

What you get is a quiet stretch of sand and shale where the cliffs loom high enough to feel genuinely dramatic, especially when the light hits the layers of red and gold stone. There's no pier, no promenade, no vendor selling ice cream. Just geology, sea, and the occasional heron picking through the shallows. On a crowded summer weekend, you might share it with a handful of other people. In winter, you could have the place to yourself.

This is walker territory, really. The path isn't especially challenging, but it demands proper footwear and a bit of care - crumbling edges and loose shale mean you can't just shuffle along in flip-flops. Allow an hour for the round trip from the car park, a bit longer if you want to properly sit and look at the view.

From Wareham, it's a straightforward drive south through Purbeck. If you're based at Durdle Door Holiday Park - just four miles away - this makes a lovely low-key alternative to that busier beach, and a good morning walk before heading elsewhere in the afternoon. The cove works best on a calm day. When the wind picks up off the Channel, it gets properly bracing.
