Plymyard Playing Fields

Just outside Chester, Plymyard Playing Fields offers a proper breath of fresh air without the crowds you'd find at more famous reserves. It's essentially an open grassland and wetland area that draws local walkers and the occasional birdwatcher keen to spot something beyond the usual suspects.

The reserve itself is straightforward - you wander through meadows and alongside water, which fills up seasonally and attracts waterfowl. On a clear day it's pleasant enough, though I won't pretend the scenery sets your heart racing. It's the sort of place you visit to clear your head rather than for dramatic vistas. A decent walk takes ninety minutes or so, depending how far you venture.

Who gets the most from it? Families with young kids will manage fine on the flatter sections, though buggies can struggle after rain. Serious birdwatchers should bring binoculars - early morning in spring and autumn is your best bet. Local history buffs won't find much to get excited about here, but if you're after a gentle stroll between other activities, it fills the gap well.

The fields are free to access, though information on exact facilities is thin. If you're based at Oakwood Farm Touring Park or Chester Fairoaks, it's close enough for a morning potter before heading into Chester proper. Don't plan your whole day around it, but as part of a broader Cheshire itinerary, it's worth knowing about.
