Pluto, Somerset Space Walk N

Walk down a quiet country lane near Bridgwater and you'll find a full-scale model of Pluto sitting in a field. It's part of the Somerset Space Walk, an outdoor art installation that maps the solar system across the landscape. The planet itself is a proper quirky sight - a grey sphere about two metres across, sitting there rather incongruously among the Somerset countryside.

This isn't a theme park or a visitor centre with gift shops. There's no queue, no entrance fee, no faffing about. You turn up, have a look, take a photo if you fancy it, and move on. The whole experience takes maybe five minutes unless you're the type who wants to contemplate the vastness of space while standing in a field.

It works best if you're already walking in the area or have a particular interest in space and public art installations. Kids might find it mildly diverting for about ninety seconds. The real point of the Space Walk is the journey between the planets - if you're serious about it, you'd walk the full route and see how the solar system unfolds across Somerset, which is genuinely interesting from a cartography standpoint.

Combine it with Mill Farm Caravan & Camping Park if you're basing yourself nearby. It's free, always accessible, and there's something rather endearing about stumbling across Pluto in the middle of nowhere. Don't make a special trip just for this one, but if you're exploring Bridgwater's surroundings, it's worth the detour.
