Plean Country Park

The wetland paths at Plean wind through proper wild country, the kind where you'll hear nothing but water and birds for stretches on end. It's a nature reserve that doesn't pretend to be anything fancier than it is - just grassland, marshes, and scrub where things actually live rather than get looked at. You're tracking alongside pools and reed beds, spotting dragonflies in summer, watching water birds that most people never get close to. The walking isn't strenuous, which suits families fine, though toddlers might struggle with muddy patches after rain.

This works brilliantly if you're based at Highland Gateway Glamping up the road - it's the sort of morning outing that gets kids genuinely interested in wildlife without requiring a coach tour or entrance fees. Bring binoculars if you've got them. The reserve is free, open whenever, which means you can pop over from Stirling without faffing about with operating hours. Allow an hour for a proper look round, longer if you're serious about birdwatching. Spring and early summer are genuinely better - more activity, less mud. Winter's quiet in a different way, but the paths get boggy.

Witches Craig, the other caravan spot nearby, puts you in similar reach. What makes Plean work is that it feels like an actual landscape rather than a tidied-up nature trail. If you want to teach kids that wildlife doesn't perform on schedule, this does that job better than most reserves.
