Plainsfield Camp

The Iron Age fortification sits on high ground above Holford, commanding views across the Somerset levels that must have made strategic sense to whoever built it roughly two thousand years ago. You're looking at defensive ramparts - earthen banks that have survived millennia, their slopes still steep enough to make you appreciate why ancient peoples chose this spot.

It's not a manicured heritage site with interpretation boards and a car park. This is proper archaeological terrain: you walk to it, the ground undulates beneath your feet, and you piece together what you're seeing yourself. The ramparts form an irregular pattern across the hilltop, and on a clear day the views justify the walk alone. History types will find themselves genuinely absorbed; families with younger children might struggle if legs are short - there's no defined path and it demands some scrambling.

Allow an hour if you're taking photographs and soaking in the setting. No admission charge, no facilities. Go midweek or early morning to avoid crowds, though honestly it rarely gets busy. If the weather turns, the site becomes properly muddy and less inviting.

Stay at Moorhouse Campsite or Secret Valley - both excellent five-star spots within four miles - and combine this with a walk on the Quantock Hills. The landscape here rewards time spent exploring on foot rather than ticking boxes. Plainsfield Camp isn't showy, but it rewards the effort.
