Place Wood Hillfort

The steep slopes mean it's a proper climb to reach the summit, which sorts out the strollers from the people who actually want to feel the landscape. On a clear day, you can see why this spot was chosen. On a misty one, you understand the strategic isolation entirely.

Families with older kids who fancy a bit of gentle archaeology will find it rewarding. Younger children might get bored after the initial scramble up. History types and moorland walkers will properly rate it - the kind of place that makes you think about how people lived and fought and watched from high ground centuries before anyone built anything else around here.

It works beautifully as a half-hour detour when you're based at Dornafield, just five miles away. Combine it with a proper walk across the moor proper, and you've got a solid afternoon.
