Pitlochry Power Station

The dam itself isn't what stops you in your tracks - it's the fish ladder. Built in 1927 to let salmon bypass the hydroelectric barrier, this concrete staircase is genuinely fascinating to watch, especially from late spring through autumn when the fish are running. You'll see them leap and rest, leap and rest, working their way upstream. It's oddly gripping, the kind of thing you think you'll spend five minutes on and somehow forty minutes have passed.

Pitlochry Power Station sits right in the heart of the town, which makes it convenient but also means it's not exactly remote or wild. The visitor centre (if it's open when you visit - do check ahead) explains the mechanics clearly enough, though the real action is outside by the water. Families with younger children might lose interest quickly, but anyone with even passing curiosity about engineering or river life will find it worthwhile. The walks around the loch are pleasant too, if you want to stretch your legs after.

It's free to visit the grounds and watch the fish ladder, which frankly is the only reason to come. Allow half an hour minimum, an hour if you're genuinely interested. The town itself has enough cafes and shops to make a proper morning or afternoon of it.
