Pissen Wood

The name alone stops you in your tracks - and yes, locals do find it amusing. Pissen Wood is a proper woodland walk near Henley-on-Thames, the kind of place that rewards a bit of curiosity if you're already in the area. It's quiet, undeveloped, and genuinely feels like you've stepped away from the Oxfordshire commuter belt, even though you're barely outside town.

What you get is a straightforward forest ramble through beech and oak, with woodland paths that are manageable year-round though muddy after rain - so decent boots are wise. The trees are tall enough to give real shelter, and on a grey English afternoon it's got that atmospheric woodland feel without any of the overcrowded-beauty-spot nonsense. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of. It's just woodland. That's rather the point.

This works best for walkers after a gentle stomp and anyone after peace and quiet. Kids won't be bored if they like exploring, though there's nothing specifically designed for them. Allow an hour or so depending on how thoroughly you want to poke around. It's free and feels like it - no crowds, no commercial creep.

If you're based at The Chilterns View or Ridgeway View Campsite, both excellent spots nearby, Pissen Wood is worth factoring in for a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It complements rather than dominates a Chilterns break. Real woodland, no faffing about.
