Pilot Pier

The old Victorian pier at Hartlepool juts into the North Sea like a finger pointing towards nothing much in particular. Pilot Pier is a working harbour structure rather than a fairground attraction, which means you're really here for the walk, the air, and the chance to watch the fishing boats come and go. The exposed stone pier offers proper views back across the coastline towards Hartlepool town centre - nothing spectacular, but honest and windswept in the way these northern piers are. On a decent day you can see why people bother with seaside walks here. On a grey Tuesday it's just a bit of character. Expect to spend twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're taking photos or watching for seabirds. It's free, obviously. No facilities, no cafe, just the pier itself. Families won't find much to do beyond "come and look at the sea," so don't expect entertainment if you've got young kids expecting rides. This is the sort of place you visit as part of a wider Hartlepool seafront wander - pop down from the town centre, get some air, then head back inland. The nearby Parkdean Crimdon Dene site is a short drive south if you're basing yourself there for a park holiday; it gives you a genuine excuse to explore the coast between trips to attractions elsewhere in Durham and Teesside.
