Pillow Mound

There's a modest earthwork just outside Haywards Heath that's been sitting in the Sussex landscape for roughly a thousand years. Pillow Mound is what archaeologists call a warren - a man-made rabbit breeding ground built in medieval times when rabbit was a luxury protein and landowners took the farming of them seriously. The mound itself is unremarkable at first glance: a raised, elongated hump of earth, maybe four metres high, surrounded by shallow ditches. But stand there for a moment and you're looking at genuine medieval infrastructure, the sort of thing most people walk past without noticing.

This appeals most to archaeology enthusiasts and local history types rather than casual day-trippers. Kids will probably lose interest after ten minutes unless you've got them primed on medieval rabbit farming beforehand. There's no visitor infrastructure - no interpretation boards, no facilities - so come knowing what you're looking at or you'll just see a bump.
