Pillmouth Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a marked tourist spot, Pillmouth Wood sits just outside Bideford and gives you exactly what it says on the tin - ancient trees, decent paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get in town. The wood sprawls across a decent chunk of land with a mix of coniferous and broadleaf trees, making it feel more substantial than your average local park. You'll find yourself on winding trails that dip through the canopy, and depending which route you take, it's anywhere from a leisurely 30-minute potter to a proper two-hour hike.

Walkers will love it without question. The paths are well-trodden and the woodland floor gives decent grip even when damp. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main routes, though pushchairs might struggle on the narrower sections. Birdwatchers and anyone into woodland photography should carve out a morning here - light filters beautifully through the trees depending on the season.

It's free to access and there are no set opening hours that I'm aware of, so you can slot it in whenever suits your holiday schedule. Spring is the obvious shout for bluebells and new growth, but frankly, it's solid year-round. The real bonus is how close it sits to the holiday parks around Bideford - Owl Valley Glamping and Broad Park are both within spitting distance, making it perfect for breaking up a long day on site or squeezing in an early walk before breakfast. If you're staying in the area, this deserves at least one visit. Not dramatic, but deeply satisfying.
