Phrympth Wood

Phrympth Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Southampton, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's dense forest - oak and beech mostly - with enough tree cover to keep things cool even on warmer days. The paths wind through without too much drama, making it accessible for families who don't fancy a full expedition but want greenery and a bit of fresh air.

You're looking at a decent afternoon activity rather than an all-day affair. Most people spend 90 minutes to two hours wandering the main routes, depending on pace and how many times the kids stop to investigate things. There's nothing flashy here - no visitor centre, no ice cream van - which is rather the point. It's just woodland being woodland.

Historically it's a working forest that's been managed for timber, so there's structure to it rather than overgrown wilderness. Worth knowing if you're the type who appreciates that sort of thing. The ground can get muddy after rain, so decent boots make sense.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites - Beechen Glamping and Rookesbury Park are both within a few miles - this makes an easy morning or afternoon break from the campsite. It's not a destination in itself, but paired with other New Forest attractions or a Southampton day trip, it fills a gap nicely. Free to walk, as far as we can tell, and open access as long as you respect it.
