Petty Hill

The walk up Petty Hill won't take long, but that's partly the appeal. Rising just over 500 metres near Kirkby Stephen, it's the sort of fell that rewards you without demanding hours of your day or supreme fitness. The views across the Pennines open up properly once you're up there - wide, rolling moorland stretches in every direction, and on a clear day you can see proper distance.

It's ideal for families who want to claim they've summited something without the commitment of the bigger peaks. The route itself is straightforward enough, though it can be boggy depending on recent weather, so decent footwear matters. Allow an hour and a half there and back if you take it steady and stop to actually look around.

Walkers based at Gillcumber Glamping Pods, just 5.5 miles away, would find this a manageable morning or afternoon outing. It pairs well with exploring the Kirkby Stephen area itself - the town has proper character and serves excellent food. The fell works as a solo walk or as part of a longer day tackling the surrounding ridges if you've got the legs for it.

Go mid-week if you can. Weekends can attract the Instagram crowd, and Petty Hill's appeal is in its simplicity rather than dramatic views or rare facilities. No cafe at the top, no visitor centre - just you, the ridge, and the Pennine landscape rolling away.
