Pettistree Church, SS Peter & Paul

The church sits quietly at the end of a narrow lane outside Wickham Market, its flint walls catching the light in a way that makes you understand why medieval builders chose this spot. St Peter & Paul is properly old - we're talking 12th century foundations - and it's the kind of place where you can actually feel the centuries rather than read about them on a placard.

Inside, the real draw is the roof. The hammerbeam construction overhead is genuinely striking, all dark wood and angles that make you crane your neck until it aches. There's also a decent font and some proper medieval carving if you're into that sort of detail. The churchyard's peaceful too - good for a quiet wander if you're passing through.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. It's not the sort of place to keep kids entertained for long unless they're genuinely interested in medieval architecture. That said, it's utterly free and usually open, making it a decent stop if you're exploring the quieter corners of Suffolk.

If you're camping at Brick Kiln Farm or Wantisden Park, this is barely a detour - maybe ten minutes from either site. It won't eat up your afternoon, but it's the kind of small-scale discovery that makes a rural holiday feel properly rewarding. Worth stopping by if you're driving through the area, though I wouldn't plan a trip solely around it.
