Peter Taylor Park

A proper Essex nature reserve east of Braintree, Peter Taylor Park is the kind of place you'll stumble across rather than plan for - and that's exactly when it shines. The main draw is the mix of woodland and open grassland, with a decent network of walking paths that don't demand fell-walking boots or a PhD in orienteering.

If you're the type who gets excited about spotting butterflies or listening to birdsong without needing it to be some rare species, you'll find plenty to occupy an hour or two. The paths are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though it's not a dedicated playground situation - it's genuinely just nature getting on with itself. Bring wellies in winter; the ground gets squelchy.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from a visit, particularly if you're in the area for a longer stay. It slots in nicely alongside Hill Farm campsite just five miles away, which means you could base yourself there for a few days and explore the wider Braintree countryside without everything being a car drive.

Timing-wise, allow 90 minutes to two hours to do the main routes without rushing. Spring and early summer are best - the woodland comes alive and you're less likely to sink into the mud. There's something refreshing about a reserve that doesn't try to be everything, just a genuine pocket of Essex countryside where you can actually hear yourself think.
