Perth Cathedral, St Ninian's

The grey stone cathedral rises abruptly from the streets of central Perth, impossible to miss and oddly commanding despite the modern shopfronts crowding around it. St Ninian's is the city's spiritual heart - a proper medieval structure that's been rebuilt, restored, and renovated more times than most buildings get repainted. You're looking at a mix of 15th-century foundations and later additions, which means the interior feels less uniform than some cathedrals, but also more lived-in.

Inside, it's surprisingly light and airy. The stained glass pulls your eye upward, and there's genuine peace to be found sitting in one of the pews - something you rarely get in city-centre churches. The organ is rather magnificent if you catch it being played. Architecturally, it won't blow your mind if you've visited Canterbury or Durham, but it's worth an hour of your time, particularly if you're interested in Scottish religious history.

Historians will find the plaques and monuments engaging enough; families with younger kids might find fifteen minutes sufficient unless there's a service on. It's free to enter, and there's no faffing about with opening hours since it functions as an active parish church.

If you're based at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site - which genuinely is excellent - the cathedral is a ten-minute drive into Perth proper. Perth Caravan Park is slightly closer. Both give you easy access to the city's other attractions without being hemmed in by urban sprawl.
