Peregine Ridge

The walk up to Peregrine Ridge rewards you properly. Starting from Port Talbot, you're climbing into something altogether different from the coastal sprawl below - moorland that catches the wind and holds the light in ways that make you understand why it's worth the effort.

The ridge itself opens up views across the valley toward the Brecon Beacons to the north, and on a clear day you can see why locals make the trek here regularly. It's not dramatic in the showy sense, but there's something compelling about the exposed plateau and the sense of being genuinely away from things, despite Port Talbot's industrial presence visible off to the side.

Walkers will find this worthwhile. The ridge is working terrain - no manicured paths or viewing platforms, just access to decent moorland walking with proper vistas. Families might manage it depending on fitness levels, though it's not a casual stroll and can be boggy after rain. History types will appreciate the Bronze Age cairns dotted about if you know where to look.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip walk and some time on top to sit and absorb things. Nearby Willow Springs Campsite makes a good base if you're planning a few days in the area - it's barely a mile away and well-rated. The ridge fits naturally into a broader exploration of the South Wales hills without requiring significant detours.
