Peppercombe Wood

Walking into Peppercombe Wood feels like stepping back about fifty years. This chunk of North Devon woodland sits just outside Bideford and hasn't been prettified or turned into some corporate leisure experience - it's proper forest, the kind where you actually feel a bit lost even though you're never more than a few minutes from civilisation.

The trees here are old. Really old. You get that sense straightaway from the gnarled trunks and the carpet of moss that's taken decades to build up. There are paths through the wood, though they're not manicured affairs - more like routes that have been worn by locals knowing where to put their feet. Dog walkers come here constantly. You'll see families pottering about on weekends, and it's the sort of place where kids actually engage because there's stuff to climb, streams to investigate, and that genuine sense of exploration.

No facilities that I'm aware of, no entrance fee, and you don't really need to plan a full day around it. An hour's walk through is satisfying. Two hours if you're the type who stops to identify trees or sit on logs. The woodland's close enough to Bideford to tack onto a broader holiday - it's a solid leg-stretch between the beach trips and eating your way through the town's chip shops.

If you're staying at Broad Park or any of the other campgrounds nearby, this wood makes a free escape route without needing to drive anywhere. It won't blow your mind, but it will remind you why people actually like being around trees.
