Pepperbox Hill

The walk up Pepperbox Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and you'll know you're getting somewhere when the landscape opens up and the Wiltshire countryside spreads out below you like a map. At the top sits a squat, red-brick tower - the Pepperbox itself - built in the 1600s as a hunting lodge, though these days it's just a viewpoint and a convenient excuse to stand around catching your breath.

On a clear day, you can see for miles. Salisbury Cathedral pokes up to the north, and the rolling chalk downland stretches east and west until it blurs into nothing. The tower is locked (don't bother trying), but that hardly matters - the views are the real draw, and they're free.

This works best for walkers who fancy something quick and achievable rather than a full day's hiking. Kids will manage it easily enough, though they might find the tower itself underwhelming once they realise they can't go inside. An hour up and back, give or take. There's a bit of a car park at the bottom, and Salisbury's close enough for a lunch stop if you're planning a longer morning out.

If you're based at Green Hill Farm Holiday Village or Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm - both are within easy reach - Pepperbox works as a good half-day walk to stretch your legs. It's proper Wiltshire walking country, and the climb's steep enough to feel earned without being punishing.
