Penshurst Church of St John the Baptist

The churchyard sits quiet and proper on the edge of Penshurst village, just a short drive from Edenbridge. St John the Baptist is one of those parish churches that rewards a proper look - medieval bones with enough later additions to keep you reading the centuries in its walls. The interior's worth twenty minutes at least: decent stained glass, a couple of monuments that tell stories if you bother to read the inscriptions, and that particular smell of old stone and furniture polish that church interiors do so well.

History types will get the most from this one. It's not a showstopper like Canterbury, but it's genuine working parish church architecture - the kind of place where you feel the weight of actual village life across five hundred years rather than tourist polish. Families with older kids might enjoy a quick visit between other activities, though very young ones will fidget. The churchyard itself is lovely for a wander if you need a break from the car.

Free to visit, obviously - it's a functioning church rather than a heritage attraction, so hours are unpredictable. Pop in during daylight and you'll likely find it open. Don't make a special trip from Edenbridge unless you're already exploring the village, but if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Luna Domes or Apple Acres are both solid options - it's well worth the ten-minute detour as part of a morning ramble. Pairs nicely with a walk round the village and a pub lunch.
