Penguin Beach

The penguins at London Zoo's Penguin Beach are the real draw here - watching them torpedo through the water at eye level is genuinely brilliant. You're separated from the pool by glass, so there's nothing between you and watching them hunt. They move like rockets down there, which never gets old even if you've seen penguins before.

It's a relatively compact area, maybe 20 minutes to really soak it in if you linger and watch their feeding behaviour. Kids absolutely love this bit - no pretending required. Adults find themselves oddly transfixed too. The enclosure feels spacious for the birds, and the setup lets you see them properly rather than squinting from some distant viewing platform.

This works brilliantly as part of a broader zoo day rather than a standalone trip. Penguin Beach is one exhibit among many at London Zoo itself, which sits in Regent's Park. If you're basing yourself at Lovat Parks, it's a straightforward journey into London proper - the zoo's walkable distance from Camden if you fancy public transport, or about 2.9 miles from the park. Best visited earlier in the day when the penguins are most active and crowds haven't built up. Winters are their prime season, when the water's cooler and they're bouncier. Spring and summer work fine too, but they're lazier in heat. Worth the detour if you're already in North London, less so if you're making a special journey just for this one exhibit.
