Pendeford Mill Nature Reserve

The mill pond at Pendeford is one of those places that creeps up on you. You're driving through Brewood and suddenly there's this proper peaceful water, ringed with woodland and the remains of an old mill that's been doing its thing here for centuries. The nature reserve sits quiet enough that you'll actually hear birds rather than traffic, which is saying something in the West Midlands.

It's a straightforward walk around the reserve - nothing strenuous, nothing that demands hiking boots. The water attracts herons and kingfishers if you're patient enough, and the woods fill up nicely with bluebells in spring. The mill building itself is weathered and atmospheric rather than grand, but that's part of the appeal. You get a sense of industrial heritage without the visitor centre crowds.

This works well for families who want to stretch their legs without commitment, and birdwatchers should time a visit during early morning or dusk. Allow an hour if you're taking it slowly. There's no formal visitor facility that I could find, so bring a packed lunch if you're staying a while.

If you're camping at Oakland Holiday Park just down the road, this makes a decent morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's not a full day's attraction, but it's the sort of place that reminds you why the countryside is worth leaving the caravan for.
