Pen-y-gwely Reservoir

The water sits there quietly, ringed by steep banks and conifer plantations, about six miles south of Llanymynech. Pen-y-gwely Reservoir is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a working water supply that's become a decent spot for a walk and a bit of peace and quiet.

There's a footpath that loops the perimeter, which takes the best part of an hour depending on your pace. The views aren't dramatic - you won't find Instagram moments here - but that's rather the point. Walkers get the most from it: the path is straightforward, the scenery uncluttered, and you'll see far fewer people than at the Lakes or Snowdonia. It's dog-friendly enough for a decent ramble, though the banks are steep in places so watch your footing after rain.

Families with young kids might find an hour enough; teenagers who actually like walking will appreciate the lack of crowds. The surrounding woodland is pleasant rather than spectacular, though it's good for spotting the odd buzzard on a quiet day. Spring's probably best, when the light's good and you're not battling the midges.

If you're staying at Sweeney Farm Glamping just up the road, it's absolutely worth the drive over for a leg-stretch. It won't dominate your day - think of it as a morning's entertainment rather than a destination in itself. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and a packed lunch if you're making a proper morning of it. Admission appears free, and there's nowhere to pay that I could see.
