Pen Selwood Community Field

The fields around Pen Selwood, just outside Wincanton, are a proper working community space rather than a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and car parks. What you get here is genuine Somerset countryside - open grassland, hedgerows, and the kind of space where locals actually go for a walk without bumping into coachloads of tourists.

It's the sort of place that rewards wandering rather than ticking boxes. The field itself is peaceful in that way only rural Somerset can be, with good views across the landscape and enough space that you can lose the sense of being anywhere near a town. Birdwatchers and walkers will find it worthwhile, especially during spring and autumn migration. There's no infrastructure to speak of - no café, no facilities - which means you need to bring what you need and respect that it's a working community resource.

Family groups with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will get on fine here. Very young children might find it a bit thin on activities. The walk from Wincanton is about forty minutes if you're inclined, or there's parking nearby. Allow an hour or two depending on how much exploring you want to do.

If you're based at Sunnyhill Campsite up the road, this is an easy afternoon outing. It doesn't compete with the major Somerset reserves - think of it more as a genuine local's ramble than a destination in itself. Worth the detour if you're staying in the area and fancy something low-key.
