Pen Dinas Hill Fort

The Iron Age fort perched above Aberystwyth commands views across Cardigan Bay that'll stop you mid-climb. This isn't some polished heritage site with a visitor centre and gift shop - it's a proper archaeological spot where you're essentially walking through two thousand years of Welsh history with only the wind for company.

You get roughly 300 metres of earthwork defences to explore, concentric rings that tell you someone took defending this hilltop seriously. The summit itself is worth the slog from town, maybe thirty minutes up from the seafront depending on fitness. On clear days you'll see right down the coast; on misty ones it's atmospheric in the way only Welsh hills manage.

History buffs will spend a solid hour here picking apart what the Demetae people built and rebuilt. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking to head back for chips. Walkers will appreciate it as a proper leg-burner with payoff - the climb isn't gentle but it's not brutal either.

Admission is free, no gates or barriers. Go early morning to dodge the post-lunch crowds from Aberystwyth itself. The nearby holiday parks - Aberystwyth Holiday Village sits practically at the base, Clarach Bay and Morfa Bychan are both within striking distance - make it an easy morning activity before heading to the beach or tackling something else in Ceredigion.

Worth doing? Absolutely, especially if you're already in Aberystwyth. Don't make a special trip from beyond an hour away.
