Pen Coppice

Ancient woodland stretches across the hillside just outside Worcester, offering proper countryside walking without the crowds you'll find at more famous spots. Pen Coppice is working forest - you'll hear chainsaws some days and spot timber stacks, but that's part of its authentic charm rather than a drawback.

Families with energetic kids will love the network of bridleways and footpaths that wind through mixed woodland. The terrain's challenging enough to tire out teenagers but not so steep that grandparents can't manage a gentle stroll. Dog walkers particularly rate this place - plenty of space for hounds to roam and interesting scents to follow.

What makes this spot special is its proper wildness. Unlike manicured country parks, Pen Coppice feels genuinely untamed. Expect muddy paths after rain, fallen trees to clamber over, and that satisfying crunch of leaves underfoot. The canopy provides decent shelter on drizzly days too.

Location-wise, it's brilliant for anyone staying at the holiday parks around Malvern - Blackmore Camping or Swallowfields Retreat are both within easy driving distance. Allow two hours minimum if you want to explore properly, though you could easily spend half a day here if the weather's kind. Free parking when I visited, and open access as far as I could tell. Well worth the short drive from Worcester for a proper woodland adventure.
