Pen Cerrig-Tewion

The walk up Pen Cerrig-Tewion isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs. Once you're there - and it won't take more than forty minutes from the car park - the views across Cardigan Bay sprawl out in front of you like someone's pulled back a curtain. On a clear day you can see for miles: the coast curves away towards Aberystwyth, and inland the Cambrian Mountains roll off into the distance. It's one of those peaks that rewards you properly for the effort.

The summit itself is modest, nothing dramatic. You're standing on moorland with wind-sculpted grass and rock outcrops. Walkers will find this a cracking spot for a midweek outing - it's accessible without being trivial, and the path is well-trodden enough that you won't get lost. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the trudge dull. This isn't a destination you'd spend hours on; it's a proper leg-stretcher before lunch.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping sites - Forester's Retreat is excellent and only five miles away - Pen Cerrig-Tewion fits neatly into a day of exploring the Ceredigion hills. It works best as part of a longer walk rather than a standalone visit. Early morning is best if you want clear skies and fewer people. Free to access, no facilities at the top, so bring water.
