Pelton Hills

The walk up Pelton Hills from Stanley rewards you with proper countryside views across County Durham - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant rolling landscape on a clear day. It's moorland terrain, so expect rough ground underfoot and a bit of wind at the top. The summit itself is modest rather than spectacular, but the vantage point makes sense once you're standing there, watching the landscape fall away toward the valleys. Takes about an hour return if you're not dawdling. Families with primary school kids will manage fine; teenagers might find it a bit tame. History enthusiasts should note there's coal mining heritage all through this area - the hills themselves tell that story if you know where to look. Nothing to pay, no facilities up top, so bring water and decent boots. Go on a weekday if possible - weekends can get a bit busy with local walkers. The real value here is fitting it into a wider walk around Stanley and the surrounding dales rather than making it a destination in itself. If you're staying at Beamish Glamping or Beamish Holiday Park just down the road, it's an excellent morning excursion before heading to the museum or exploring further afield. The path is well-trodden but unmarked in places, so having a map app ready saves confusion. Best visited in spring or autumn when the weather's settled and you won't overheat on the climb.
