Pegasus Open Space

East of Ely, Pegasus Open Space is a sprawling nature reserve that feels properly removed from the fuss. You get wetland, grassland, and woodland all in one go - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's good for a wander if you're into spotting birds or just want somewhere quiet to stretch your legs without the crowds you'd get at more famous reserves.

The terrain is mostly flat, which means families with younger kids won't struggle, though it can get boggy after rain so proper footwear matters. Walkers often use it as part of a longer route through the Ely area rather than making it a destination on its own. Bring binoculars if you're keen on birdwatching - herons, warblers, and various waterfowl turn up depending on the season. Spring and early summer are best for wildlife activity.

If you're staying at Hatters Meadows or Heatherbield Lodge, both just a couple of miles away, this reserve slots in nicely for a half-day outing. It won't keep you occupied for a full day, mind you - budget two to three hours unless you're genuinely serious about ornithology. There's something about the openness of the place that's rather restorative after a few days of caravan life. The paths are reasonably maintained, though you'll want to check conditions first if it's been wet.
