Peel Fell

The walk up Peel Fell doesn't announce itself as anything special until you're halfway there. Then the Northumberland moorland spreads out proper wide around you, and you realise why folk make the effort from Hexham. It's a modest peak at 603 metres, but the approach from the Pennine Way is straightforward enough - rolling uphill through heather and rough grass, no scrambling required. What you get at the top is a view that reaches south into the Pennines and north towards the Scottish borders. On a clear day (and they're frequent enough up here) it's genuinely worth the couple of hours. The fell itself is unremarkable - just a cairn and open moorland - but that's rather the point. There's no café, no facilities, nothing but you and the hills. This is proper walking country, not a visitor attraction with amenities. Families with younger legs might find the ascent tedious; this one's for people who actually enjoy the process of walking. Allow two to three hours return depending on fitness. It works well as part of a longer moorland loop or as a day out based from Hexham. If you're camping at Kielder Campsite nearby, it makes a solid morning expedition before heading back for something less strenuous. Spring and summer are best - winter can be boggy and exposed. The Pennine Way passes right by, so you'll see other walkers, but rarely crowds.
