Peckforton Wood

You'll know Peckforton Wood by the way the light changes as you step in from the Cheshire farmland. This is proper woodland - dense canopy, good paths, the sort of place where you actually feel like you've left Chester behind even though it's only a few miles south. The trees here are mixed deciduous and conifer, which means it's decent year-round, though autumn's when the place really shows off.

Walking is the main event. There's enough woodland to spend a solid two hours exploring without retracing your steps, and the terrain's manageable for families with older kids - nothing too steep but it's not a flat plod either. You'll pass through different sections of woodland, some with proper forest floor quiet, others where you bump into the edges of local estates. It's the kind of place where you might spot deer if you're lucky, and the bird life is decent.

Bring a map or check what's available locally before you arrive - signal can be patchy under the canopy. There's no obvious visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. Free to access as far as I know, which is the only way woodland walks should work.

If you're staying at Pitch & Canvas or any of the glamping spots nearby, Peckforton Wood is an easy morning or afternoon venture. It's good enough to slot into a park holiday without being a destination in itself - solid local walking that doesn't demand a special trip, but rewards one if you're already in the area.
