Peaks Covert

The trees here are proper ancient, some of them. Peaks Covert sits inland from Cleethorpes, a stretch of woodland that feels genuinely removed from the caravan parks and seafront chaos. It's a working forest in parts, which means you're walking through real landscape rather than manicured parkland - there's something honest about that.

Walkers will find it absorbing. The paths wind through mixed woodland, and it's the sort of place where you notice things - bluebells when they're out, the occasional deer if you're lucky, the light filtering through properly old oaks. Nothing flashy. It's not a tourist attraction in the conventional sense; there's no visitor centre or tearoom, which is precisely why it works.

Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before the novelty wears thin, unless they're the type who genuinely love a forest walk. Older children and proper walkers could spend half a day here without complaint. The terrain is relatively easy going, which helps.

If you're staying at Haven Cleethorpes Beach Holiday Park just down the road, this is an excellent way to break up a coastal holiday - get the kids away from the beach huts and donkeys for an afternoon. The contrast works well. It's free to walk, obviously, and you can turn up whenever. Spring's probably loveliest, but it's usable year-round unless it's been torrential. Worth a detour? Only if you actually enjoy woodland. If you're after thrills and attractions, this isn't it.
