Peagle Wood

Peagle Wood is a proper working forest just outside Oxford where you can actually walk among trees that people have been managing for centuries. It's not a manicured country estate - this is the real thing, with a mix of broadleaf and conifer woodland that shifts with the seasons. You'll find decent walking trails threading through, though they're not signposted like a theme park, so bring a map or know where you're going.

The wood works best for serious walkers and anyone who fancies a bit of forest bathing without the twee wellness marketing. Kids will either love scrambling about between the trees for a couple of hours or get bored once they've spotted their first squirrel - depends on the child. On a misty autumn morning it's genuinely atmospheric; on a bright summer Saturday it's just very green and quite busy.

Access is free, and you can spend anywhere from ninety minutes to half a day here depending on how much ground you want to cover. Spring's the best time if you're into wildflowers and birdsong. Summer's sticky. Winter's muddy but quieter.
