Paxton Pits is a working gravel extraction site that's been transformed into something genuinely worth a detour - a proper nature reserve where you can actually watch the landscape reinvent itself. The flooded pits and shallow pools attract everything from great crested grebes to common terns, and there's a real sense of witnessing ecological recovery in action rather than just strolling through manicured parkland.

It's best suited to serious birdwatchers and nature photographers who won't mind a bit of patience.
