PAWSOME PARK

The name says it all, really - this is a proper dog lover's paradise just outside Stanley in Tyne and Wear. Pawsome Park is exactly what it sounds like: a space dedicated to celebrating all things canine, from interactive exhibits to photo opportunities that'll have your Instagram followers in stitches. You'll find everything from breed information to play areas where dogs can actually run around and be dogs, which is refreshing compared to the sterile museum experience you get elsewhere.

It's brilliant for families with kids who are obsessed with animals, though I'd warn you not to expect a full day's entertainment if your children are older - a couple of hours does the job nicely. Dog owners obviously get the most from it, but even if you're just mildly keen on four-legged friends, it's worth the visit. The whole thing has a homemade, enthusiast-run feel rather than corporate polish, which I actually prefer.

For a holiday in the area, you're spoiled for glamping options. Beamish Glamping and West Hall Glamping both pull five stars and sit within a few miles, making Pawsome Park an easy half-day stop before heading back to your pod. Beamish Holiday Park is closer still if you fancy something more traditional. The proximity to Stanley means you won't waste petrol chasing it, and the whole area has enough going on - Beamish Museum is nearby if you want a proper cultural afternoon - to justify a long weekend.
