Parson's Heddon Plantation

The woodland here is proper dense - ancient oaks and conifers packed tight enough that you lose the sky once you're a few metres in. Parson's Heddon Plantation sits just outside Plymouth's sprawl, which is both blessing and curse: close enough for a half-day venture from the city, far enough that you actually feel like you've left it behind.

Walking through feels more substantial than a quick woodland stroll. The paths are well-trodden but not manicured - this isn't a theme park version of nature. You're looking at genuine forest floor, proper damp underfoot after rain, with ferns and moss doing their thing undisturbed. The light filtering through the canopy shifts throughout the day, so the place looks entirely different at 10am versus 3pm.

Historically minded types might enjoy knowing this is working woodland with some age to it, though frankly the trees don't tell their stories on a plaque. Families with young kids get maybe ninety minutes of genuine engagement before restlessness kicks in. Older walkers and serious hikers will appreciate the genuine woodland experience without the tourist infrastructure.
