Parsonage Wood

The woodland around Parsonage Wood, just outside Henfield, is proper Sussex - dense trees, muddy paths in winter, and the kind of quiet you don't get near towns. It's a genuine forest walk rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means it rewards exploration but won't hand you everything on a silver platter.

You'll find yourself on a network of trails threading through mature woodland, with enough variation to keep things interesting for a couple of hours. The trees do their job - it feels properly isolated even though you're only a few miles from Henfield. Spring brings bluebells, autumn turns golden, and summer can be thick and cool when the rest of Sussex is baking.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find the lack of marked facilities a bit frustrating - there's no visitor centre, no obvious amenities that I could see, and you're navigating by instinct rather than signposts. Bring a map or a phone with offline routes loaded. The mud can be relentless after rain, so decent boots matter.

It's free to access, which is the main appeal. Allow two to three hours if you want to properly explore without rushing. The nearby parks - Honeybridge and Washington Caravan & Camping are both within striking distance - make this a decent add-on to a Sussex break rather than a destination in itself. Worth the detour if you're already in the area and fancy stretching your legs, but don't plan a day around it alone.
