Parsloes Park

Parsloes Park sits just south of Dagenham in east London, a proper working nature reserve that doesn't make a fuss about itself. You'll find meadows, woodland, and ponds - the sort of place that actually matters for wildlife rather than just looking the part. The main draw is the walking trails through genuinely wild bits of London, which sounds daft but it's true. You can spot birds, insects, and if you're lucky, the occasional fox slinking through the undergrowth.

Historically types will appreciate that this land has been managed for nature for decades now. It's not manicured or twee. The paths are decent enough, though muddy patches are part of the deal. Allow an hour for a proper wander, two if you're into bird spotting or photography.

It works well as a half-day break if you're staying nearby - Abbey Wood Experience Freedom Glamping is under five miles away and makes a solid base for exploring east London's green spaces. The reserve is free and you can rock up any time, which is genuinely refreshing. Fair warning though: it's not showy. If you need visitor centres and facilities, you'll be disappointed. But if you want actual nature - untidy, buzzing, proper nature - this delivers. Families with kids who'll run around are fine here. Serious walkers will find it a bit brief as a sole destination, but brilliant as part of a bigger day out.
