Parklands Lake

The water at Parklands Lake sits still and reflective most mornings, which is when you'll want to be here if you're after decent photographs or just a bit of peace. It's a proper working fishery near Northallerton - think carp, roach, and pike rather than a leisure lake with pedalo hire. The banks are well-maintained, paths are clear, and there's enough space that you won't feel crowded even on a decent day.

Walkers will appreciate the loop around the water. It's not arduous, takes a couple of hours at a reasonable pace, and the flat terrain means families with younger kids won't hit a wall halfway round. History buffs won't find much to get excited about here - it's a modern facility - but the surrounding North Yorkshire countryside is genuine. Bring binoculars if you're into bird spotting; you'll see herons, grebes, and the usual waterfowl.
