Parker's Piece

Parker's Piece is Cambridge's answer to a proper urban green space - a sprawling open grassland right on the eastern edge of the city that locals have been using for centuries. It's the sort of place where you'll see students kicking a ball about, dog walkers doing their circuits, and families spreading blankets in summer without a tree in sight to block the view.

The appeal is straightforward. There are no manicured gardens or visitor facilities to speak of, just open ground with decent sightlines across flat Cambridgeshire countryside. Good for a walk, better for a run. If you've got kids who need to burn energy without the constraints of a formal park, this works. Bring a ball or a frisbee and you'll fit right in.

It's free and open all hours - more or less a piece of the city's commons than a destination attraction. Allow an hour for a proper walk around the perimeter, or just pop over for twenty minutes if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites. Cherry Hinton Caravan and Motorhome Club is barely two miles away, making this a decent way to stretch your legs between pitching up and heading into Cambridge proper.

Worth the detour? Only if you're already in the area. It's not going to hold your attention for a full afternoon, and it lacks the wow factor of a proper nature reserve. But if you're camping locally and want somewhere flat and open for a quick constitutional, Parker's Piece delivers without fuss.
