Park Bottom

Park Bottom is a proper woodland walk through beech and oak forest just outside Stroud - the kind of place you stumble into and suddenly remember why you came to Wiltshire in the first place. The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter, and on a clear day the light filters through the canopy in that golden, almost theatrical way. It's not dramatic or showy. There's no visitor centre, no playground, no refreshment kiosk. What you get instead is quiet forest, a few well-trodden paths, and the genuine sense that you're walking through something ancient and undisturbed.

This is absolutely the spot for walkers who want to stretch their legs without faffing about with waymarkers or elevation gain. Allow an hour or so, depending on how many wrong turns you fancy. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes - it's all trees - but older children who actually like forests rather than facilities will get on fine. If you're staying at Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm nearby, it's worth the short drive over as a morning walk before heading into Stroud town itself.

It's free, obviously. There's likely parking somewhere close by, though the signage is minimal. Go when it hasn't rained for a day or two - the paths get boggy otherwise. Nothing fancy, nothing Instagram-ready. Just a proper wood. That's the whole point.
