Pardshaw Crag

The climb up Pardshaw Crag takes about forty minutes from the car park near Cockermouth, and it's steep enough to warm you up properly without being a full Alpine slog. What you get at the top is a cracking viewpoint across the northern Lake District - on a clear day you can pick out the fells rolling away toward Scotland. The crag itself is a modest rocky outcrop, but the path is well-trodden and the views justify the huff and puff.

Walkers will find this worth the detour, especially if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites like Greysouthen or Castle Guards Farm - both are within easy striking distance and you could easily tick this off alongside other Cockermouth-area walks. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a grind, though the payoff keeps them motivated. There's nothing here you need to book or pay for - just park sensibly and head up.

The fell is best tackled in the morning before weather closes in, as it's exposed enough that cloud can roll in quickly. Allow a couple of hours all in if you want to sit about at the top and soak it in. It's the sort of place that gives you real fell-walking satisfaction without requiring mountaineering skills or leaving you knackered for the rest of your holiday.
