The walking is gentle and flat, which means families with younger kids won't grind to a halt halfway through, though honestly there's not masses to keep restless ones entertained for hours on end.

It's the sort of place that rewards proper birdwatchers and anyone after a quiet walk with real countryside feel, just a couple of miles from Winchelsea. The marshes can be boggy depending on recent rain, so waterproof boots are non-negotiable. Allow an hour to ninety minutes for a decent circuit without rushing. Free to access - no admission charge - which is a bonus when you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks. Winchelsea Sands is closest if you want the coastal angle, though Rye Harbour Holiday Park sits at a better rating if you're willing to go an extra couple of miles.

Worth fitting in during a park break if you're keen on birdlife and don't mind a bit of weather. Less compelling if you're after dramatic scenery or a full day's entertainment though.
