Pannel Valley Nature Reserve

The walk through Pannel Valley feels like stepping into a corner of Sussex that time forgot. Wetland stretches open up before you, with reed beds that whisper when the wind picks up and water that reflects the sky properly - none of that murky brown you sometimes get. The reserve sits just outside Winchelsea, close enough for a morning venture from any of the nearby holiday parks without eating into your day.

Wildlife watching is the main event here. Bring binoculars and you'll spot water birds you've never heard of - bitterns, marsh harriers, that sort of thing. If you're not into twitching, the boardwalks and paths still work as a decent leg-stretch, though don't expect dramatic views or manicured gardens. This is proper working wetland, not a visitor attraction dressed up as nature.

The reserve works well as a quiet break from the Rye Harbour and Camber Sands holiday parks - you're close enough that it doesn't warrant a massive drive, but different enough to feel like you've genuinely left the caravan behind. Families with older kids who'll sit still for half an hour will get something from it. Toddlers will probably find it a bit samey after a while, though splashing in puddles never gets old.

Could be free - many Sussex nature reserves are - but check before you go since details are thin on the ground. Allow an hour for a proper wander. Spring and early summer bring the best bird activity, though autumn migration can throw up surprises too.
