Oxleas Wood

You'll find 150 acres of ancient woodland just south of the Thames in south-east London, which feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from the capital. Oxleas Wood is properly old - some of these trees have been here for centuries, and walking beneath them in autumn when the light filters through the canopy is something special.

It's a straightforward nature reserve with decent trails that suit everyone from families after a gentle afternoon to serious walkers wanting proper distance.
